Day 2 - Singapore

Luckily, sleep came easy and before I knew it we were up and ready for our first full day in Singapore. We got out the door of our apartment just after 9 with a rough outline for what we wanted to do.

We began by taking the metro down to the Marina Bay Sands so we could begin the day looking out over Singapore before the forecasted rains began.

We made our way through the lobby of the Marina Bay Sands and up to the Sky Deck of the hotel It was relatively empty as we made our way up the 56 floors. Once we got to the top of the hotel we were able to look out over the city at the Gardens by the Bay, the cities skyline and across downtown.

Looking out from the Sky Deck it was truly remarkable to see all the freighters and ships in the Singapore Strait. They were scattered around as far as the horizon.

From the Sky Deck we made our way over to the Gardens by the Bay. We walked through the SuperTree Grove and over to the Flower Dome.

From the Gardens by the Bay we made our way through the Marina Bay Sands Shoppes and over towards Chinatown by way of the Telok Ayer Market. We got to the market right at lunchtime and walked through the market as all the local business people were going to get something to eat.

After leaving the market we made our way north up towards Old Nyonya and beyond. We were headed to Burnt Ends so that we could try and get a walk in table for lunch but after getting to the restaurant we were greeted by my own lack of research, the restaurant is closed on Mondays. From Burnt Ends we walked back to Old Nyonya with the intent of getting lunch at Tian Tian but found that it was also closed. So we had to "settle" for Ah Tai and their Hainanese Chicken Rice.

After enjoying that great tasting and cheap meal we made our way out of the market and up to Smith Street on our way to the metro so that we could grab a train and make our way to Henderson Wave.

At this point in the day the heat was getting quite oppressive and we were feeling the humidity. Henderson Wave is a bridge connecting two hills and overlooking part of Singapore. Unfortunately for us, that meant walking up the hill until we got to the stairs that lead to the bridge. By this point it felt like the temperature was over 100 degrees. We even found a cat taking a nap on the bridge in the shade.

The bridge itself is not overly impressive to look at but from certain angles you can see the waves created by the steel cages weaving above and below the bridge. It is quite remarkable and would be a great sight at night with lights illuminating its curves.

From there we headed back to our apartment to get some more water, relax and get our legs back under us. By this point we had walked 11 miles and were exhausted from the heat.
